This year, while approaching January 1, I took extra time to consider not only what my resolutions would be but also how I could realistically achieve them. If you’re like me at all, the year starts off strong but major changes to behaviors don’t last as long as you’d like.
As I was flying home for the holidays, I was fortunate enough to sit between two very kind and intelligent people. As we got to know each other, it was easy to talk about our lives in a way that only strangers who may never see each other again can. I was explaining my frustrations with falling off the wagon, so to speak, when it comes to January’s resolutions and was offered some simple advice that is sticking with me. “Start with smaller goals,” my new acquaintance suggested.
I’ve mulled this over and over and am realizing how I can apply this simple suggestion to goals and resolutions of all sizes. For example, this year I intend to have my own garden: a large-scale goal when I think of the work and time that will have to go into it, especially since I’ve never started a garden from start to finish. Thinking about it in such grand terms, I might let the idea overwhelm me and end up angry at myself for failing in the end. But if I start now, little by little, small goal by small goal, it seems less overwhelming. This week I’ll buy seeds. Next week I’ll read about soil. The following week I’ll draw out a map of where I’ll plant things and so on. By the time spring comes around, I’ll be prepared, my garden will already be well on it’s way and I’ll have a series of accomplished goals under my belt.
The same can be done with the classic, “I’m going to get into shape” resolution. Start with daily goals or even half-daily goals. This morning, no cream and sugar in my coffee. Tomorrow, make it to Pilates class. The next day, no snack after dinner and so on. Before you know it, being in shape will not feel like an overwhelming goal but will be a realistic outcome from accomplishing smaller, manageable goals.
This year at The Movement Studio, we invite you to commit, little by little and day by day, to reaching your goals in the new year. We offer a wide range of Pilates classes for any level from beginner to the well-seasoned. We are also offering our one-of-a-kind teacher training program run by the very talented and knowledgable Karen Weggler and Danielle McCulloch. And The Movement Studio is giving clients a chance to particpate in running clinics for all you running afficionados out there.
So give us a call (604.732.9055) or email us at info (at) themovementstudio (dot) ca to sign up for classes. Maybe just start with one. Then commit to a few more. Let us help you achieve your goals day by day, stretch by stretch and accomplishment by accomplishment.
And much peace and love to you in the new year, from everyone at The Movement Studio.
